Mountain Building

Like you, mountains also grow old, but not so quickly. The vast Himalayan mountain range in Asia began to grow 50 million years ago, but it is so young that it is still being formed. Mountains are formed by the forces of plate tectonics, moments that take place in the Earth's crust, pressing and squeezing against the edges of continents. These forces thrust mountains out of the Earth. Some ancient mountain ranges, such as the urais in Russia and the Scottish High lands, mark where continents collided at some time in the past. Greek stresses are involved in mountain building.
