A Man of Faith

“And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”

Genesis 15:5-6
God told Abraham He would bless him if he stepped out by faith and trusted Him. Abraham had a difficult decision to make. Would he step out by faith and follow God to an unknown land? Or would he stay in his town and continue his comfortable life? This decision would determine the fate of a nation.

We see in Genesis 12:4, “So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.” Abraham decided to trust God and leave his home in Ur.

In leaving Ur, Abraham had to denounce his activities of the past. He had to leave his friends, home, and job. He may have faced fear and uncertainties when he decided to trust God. He may have wondered where his new home would be, how long he would have to travel, and how he would provide for his family. There even may have been people who questioned him or criticized him for leaving his home. They may have mocked him and tried to discourage him from leaving. But through it all, Abraham decided to trust God and step out by faith.

When you decide to live for God, there may be people who will question you and mock you. When you step out by faith and determine to trust God, the devil will bring doubts and questions into your mind. He will try to get you to remember the “comforts” of your old life, so you will turn back. But no matter what, you must step out like Abraham and trust God.

Also, by leaving Ur and denouncing his past activities, Abraham had to face the uncertainty of the future. He realized he did not know where God would lead him or how long it would take, but he did realize God was in control. Abraham had faith that where God would lead him would be better than the land from which he came. He had faith that God would take care of Him.

Friend, when you are stepping out by faith and trusting God, realize that whatever happens, God is in control. Any trial, uncertainty, or difficulty you go through is predetermined by God. He knows just what you need to go through to become the person He wants you to be. Realize that God has great blessings in store for you if you will trust Him and step out by faith.

Someone once said, “Faith is starting out before you figure out how it’s going to turn out.” Are you struggling with stepping out and trusting God? Determine to step out, trust God, and live by faith. Trust God to guide your steps and provide for you as you seek to live for Him. God has great blessings in store for you, but you must first decide to live for Him through faith. Seek God and ask Him for the strength to begin living by faith today.
