Thermodynamic Variables

In Thermodynamics, several characteristics of a thermodynamic system play dominant roles to describe the state of a thermodynamic system.

There are basically, two types of functions in thermodynamics.

(i) State Function,
(ii) Path Function.


There are certain characteristics of a thermodynamic system in equilibrium, which depends only on the final state at which thermodynamic equilibrium has been achieved. Such characteristics have a unique value at a certain equilibrium condition regardless the way through which equilibrium condition has been achieved. If a thermodynamic system changes its state from an equilibrium state 1 to equilibrium state 2, then the change of the value of these characteristics only depend upon its values at initial state 1 and final state 2.
