A career in video editing is a part of
the entertainment and media industry.
A right field for people with
creative bends of mind.
The entire process of making art,
aesthetic in the visual media,
lies in the technique of editing.
Video editing is the process of
re-arranging or modifying sections of
video from one or more video tapes to
form a refined and final piece of video.
It is in the post production process that
video editing plays an important role.
The work of the video editor involves
editing soundtracks, film and video for
the motion picture, cable
and broadcast visual media industries.
It is completely up to the editor
who decides on the length
and the quality of the final product.
There are two types of video editing
Linear Editing (Tape to tape),
and Non-linear editing or Digital Video Editing.
In Digital Video Editing
computer technology is used
to edit the process onscreen.
While in linear editing the required portion
is copied from one tape to another.
Any changes or additions needed
could be made only by copying the edited content
onto another tape, causing undesirable degradation of images.
In Non- linear editing, video and audio data
are first captured to hard disks or any other
digital storage device and then edited
on the computer using an array
of software’s available for editing.
Here data can be edited and ensuing changes made
without duplicating the actual film data.
It is faster, cheaper, and more flexible
and saves time and money
when compared to the conventional way of editing.
The boom in the media and entertainment
and the internet industry has created the need
for more and more video editors.
The advent of streaming videos
and movie clips in websites has also increased
the need for people in this line.
There is a high level of competition among the editors.
No formal training is needed
for a career in video editing.
To pursue a career in Digital video editing,
one must have training in the computer systems
and programs used in digital video editing.
For doing specialized courses in reputed institutes,
candidates must possess the qualification prescribed
by the respective institutes/ colleges.
Digital video editors often have
a bachelor’s or master’s degree in animation or media arts.
Job Prospect:
Varied career opportunities are arise
for the video editors and one can find job placement
in film and TV production studios, web design companies,
advertising and multimedia companies.
They can work with independent production companies
and for motion picture studios. Majority of video editors
are employed on a freelance basis,
working on short-term contracts for post-production studios,
television companies and corporate employers.
The beginners in the initial stage can earn
between Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 17,000 per month.
The earnings can be raised after a few years of experience.
Those working as freelance will be paid per hour
and the amount paid will depends up on the company.
Large studios will be offering competitive salaries
for the top editors in the field.
