alter overview

Brief Overview

some basic 'rules' for setting up

traditionaly when you stand facing your alter you should be facing North.
But some traditions favour East.
Its really down to choice, there are sound arguments for both; I prefer North.
I have divided my alter into 3 'zones';
Left, for the goddess/Lady
Center, for the Great Spirit and the 4 elements.
Right for the god.
Everything to the left of the alter is, to me, symbolic of the goddess and feminine aspects of nature and my own personality.

Everything in the center of the alter is to honour the Great Spirit (the ultimate source etc) and the 4 elements.

Every thing to the right of the alter symbolises (to me) the god and masculine aspects of nature and my personality.
When working a ritual or spell I 1st decide if the intent is masculine (ie protection, job seeking) or feminine (attracting love, inspiration) and work on the relevant side of the alter.
This isnt a requirement, but I find it helps me focus better.
The pages that follow explain the personal symbolism behind my alter decoration and hopefully will help others to set up their own alter.
Remember there isnt a single 'right way', its what works for you. This is just a rough guide that may give you some inspiration.
