Medical College to start session from next year

BARPETA, July 24 – The works on the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital here is going on in full swing and the college will start its academic activities from the 2012. This was disclosed by the principal of the college Dr Kabul Saikia.

Speaking to this correspondent in his office, Dr Saikia, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon of the State, claimed that the works on the vast project is running ahead of schedule and the admission of the students will be possible from the next year. He lamented that most people, including the educated ones, hold the common notion that it has to start working as soon as it was inaugurated. But the Medical Council of India norms makes it clear that in order to start a medical college there must be a hospital commencing its function one year before the admission of students.

Supporting his claim of activities ahead of the schedule Dr Saikia stated that as many as 86 faculties have been appointed in the college and all of them have joined their respective duties. Besides, all the posts, including 300 nurses required till the end of the fifth year of the academic activities have been sanctioned. This will not only improve the treatment and educational activities of the college but will keep it free from any adverse effects in case of any change of policy decisions of the State and the Central Government.

Referring to the financial position the principal said that the entire amount required for its establishment has been sanctioned and has been kept separately so that the works does not suffer midway. As regards to the equipments he informed that all the machineries installed in the hospital are of very high standard procured through competitive and transparent manner and the authority is in no mood of compromising with the quality. However, he said that a number of modern machineries have not been able to make functional due to the problem of electricity supply and the matter is being dealt with the ASEB authority. Once the uninterrupted and even supply of electricity is assured people will need nowhere to go for diagnosis whatever complex his illness may be, he asserted. To a specific question regarding the infrastructure development he said that all the buildings will be ready by the second year that is three years in advance than the required time.

The principal informed that a team of MCI is scheduled to visit the college for inspection in September or October next and the authority is busy to meet the requirement till then. However, he asserted that there is no deficiency regarding the MCI norms up to this stage and the college authorities are very much optimistic.

Pointing out to the response of the people the principal said that eight to nine hundred patients visit the hospital daily and the doctors and other staff has left no stone unturned to provide satisfactory service to all of them. He tried to clarify it time and again that it will take sometime to make it a full fledged one and appealed to all section of the people to bear until it is completed in all respect. He asserted that if it is completed as planned it will not be an institution of repute not only in the State but will be a centre of excellence in India.

The seed of the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital sprouted at Barpeta on the February 11, 2005 when the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of the institution that day. The construction works began in June 2008 and the hospital section of the college was inaugurated on February 11, 2011 by the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
