Only about half the people who acquire the HIV virus (Human Immuno Deficiency Virus) show symptoms and these are non specific viral symptoms such as fever, swelling of glands and perhaps a fine rash. The virus remains and indeed continues to reproduce within the body but causing no symptoms for an unpredictable period of time.
However almost inevitably the sufferer once infected will eventually move from being HIV positive ie infected by the HIV virus to develop the array of symtoms that comprises the illness of AIDS,This maybe ten years or more. The immume system breaks down leaving the sufferer prone to a wide range of infections.
Common infections are with tuberculosis and with types of skin cancer called kaposis sarcoma. There is usually persistant diarrhoea, thrush recurrent shingles together with weight loss and persistantly feeling ill.Treatment- Drugs are normally given in combination and there is now a wide range of drugs available for this.Examples are zidovudine and ritonavir,HIV/AIDSis a controllable illness though not yet necessarily curable.
