Nasir Jones was born september 14 1973 to Ann Jones and musician Olu Dara.Nasir grew up in the notorious Long Island,Queensbridge projects that were made famous by Marley Marl´s classic ´The Bridge´.Nas,as he was known, dropped out of school in the 8th grade to pursue a life in the streets.Although he finished school early,he had developed an astounding knowledge of literacy and it was this knowledge that made the transition to rap easier. In 1991 Nas was approached to drop a verse on Main Source´s ´Live At The Barbeque´.The verse was one the high points of the album and it created an instant buzz for the Mc.Due to this publicity,Mc Serch of 3rd Bass asked Nas to provide a track for the Zebrahead soundtrack. The track he supplied was ´Halftime´.Upon hearing the song Serch was so amazed,he made the track the lead single.Shortly
Following this Columbia Records decided to offer Nas a deal,Nas agreed and work began on his debut album.´Illmatic´ was released in april ´94.It astounded critics with its straight forward rough New York underground tales that were told so well, that u actually felt the pain of ghetto living. The album was rightly deemed a classic and soon Nas started work on the follow up ´It Was Written´.Although considerably different in style from his debut the album was another success. It not only satisfied the majority of the streets but it also gave Nas his first taste of crossover success. However following the next years assassination of The Notorious B.I.G,the title of king of Ny was vacant.Nas claimed it almost immediately, but his next two albums would see him de-throned very quickly. The underrated ´I Am´ and the terrible ´Nastradamus´
effectively ended his reign of NY,the charts and most importantly the streets. However Nas continued on and released a collective album called ´Queensbridge´s Finest´ the album featuring other QB mc´s such as AZ,Cormega,Mobb Deep and C-N-N temporarily gave him a little success .The lead single ´Oochie Wally remix´ featuring The Bravehearts was heralded as the most sexually explicit record of all time and was a hit in the clubs. However another New York rapper,Brooklyn´s Jay Z released his new album in 2001 called ´The Blueprint´ and the first song on the album entitled ´Takeover´ was a 4 minute no holds barred diss on Nas.Jay poked fun at the rapper saying he had only made one good album and he also made referrence to Nas´s woman at the time who had cheated on him.´Takeover´ prompted a underground response from Nas,who dropped
a freestyle diss of his own over Eric B and Rakim´s ´Paid In Full´.Shortly after,Nas released his most successfull album since his debut. The appropriately titled ´Stillmatic´ included 2 Jay Z diss records,´Ether´ and ´Got Urself A Gun´.The former containing a distorted phrase from another Jay Z adversary Tupac Shakur. The phrase ´Fuck Jay Z´ was lifted from Pac´s song ´Fuck Friends´ and it was used to open up the song. With these songs Nas regained the top spot in rap and the next year 2 more Nas albums were released.´The Lost Tapes´ and a remix album proceeded the hardest period of Nas´s life.In 2002,Nas´s mother finally lost her long battle with cancer. Her death didnt prevent Nas from releasing his next studio album ´Gods Son´,which he dedicated to his her.The album spawned numerous hits and put him back atop the rap game.
