Deathrow Records

Deathrow Records was founded in 1992 when ex-N.W.A. member Andre ´Dr Dre´ Young teamed up with former football player and bodyguard Marion ´Suge´ Knight to form the most successful hip hop label to date. The first Deathrow release was Dre´s critically acclaimed debut album ´The Chronic´.The album not only introduced Deathrow but it is also showcased the labels other ´inmates´.One of which was Long Beach native Snoop Doggy Dogg.Through the huge buzz that ´The Chronic´ had made for Snoop,he released his highly anticipated debut ´Doggystyle´.The album debuted at no.1 and became the highest selling debut for a rap artist ever (until 50cent broke it in 2003).At this point Deathrow was going strong, they had movies, soundtracks aswell as other artists all selling well.Noone at the label thought things could get any better, but it did.
In spring ´95 Suge Knight visited New York Mc Tupac Shakur in Clinton Correctional to offer him a record deal.Tupac told him that if he signed him he would make Deathrow the biggest label in the game.So Suge had Tupac sign a contract hand written on toilet paper and then bailed him out of jail.Only a few months later Tupac released the biggest selling deathrow record to date,´All Eyez On Me´ was a double disc that blew the competition out of the water. However on the ´How Do U Want It´ single Tupac recorded a b side called ´Hit Em Up´.The record was a diss record aimed at Deathrows rivals New York´s Bad Boy records. This song was used by the media to create a east coast, west coast war and it was this war that would rob Deathrow of its biggest star.On the night of september 7th 1996,Tupac was shot in a drive by shooting in Las
Vegas. He was pronounced dead on the 13th.Shortly after this Deathrow released a new Pac album entitled ´The 7 Day Theory´ under the assumed name Makaveli. The album was another hit,but a few months later Deathrows CEO Knight was incarcerated for a parole violation that occured the night of Tupac´s shooting. He was sentenced to 7 yrs in prison.Whilst in jail his label collapsed due to FBI investigation,Dre and Snoops exodus and decreasin record sales. When Knight was in jail the companys only saving grace was that Tupac Shakurs unreleased material was selling very well, these albums may have kept them in business.Suge Knight was released from prison in august ´01.He has since resurrected ´Tha Row´.He and Afeni Shakur still continue to release her sons material, with a 2 new albums scheduled for release this fall.
