Gregory Helms

Once known for fighting for truth, justice and the WWE way, Gregory Helms no longer cares about anything but his own prosperity. Formerly known as The Hurricane, Helms has removed his famous mask and cape, turning his back on his fans and his super-sized crime fighting partner Rosey. Now on SmackDown, Helms says that he’s the greatest cruiserweight of all-time, and will do anything it takes to show the fans his true talents.

Since jumping to SmackDown and winning the Cruiserweight Championship at the 2006 Royal Rumble, Helms has taken on all comers, saying that he can beat any cruiserweight at any time. However, on SmackDown’s recent tour of Australia & New Zealand, Helms broke his nose during a Six-Man Tag Team Match. He still competed the next Friday night on SmackDown, as General Manager Theodore Long forced him to face Chris Benoit in a Champion vs. Champion Match. Helms tried to walk out on the match, but several fellow cruiserweights ushered him back into the ring, where he was forced to tap out to the Crippler Crossface.

Helms will be out of action for an undetermined amount of time as his injury heals, but when he returns, he will undoubtedly continue to defend the Cruiserweight Championship with a chip on his shoulder.

Of course, Helms wasn’t always filled with angst. The Hurricane was once a mild mannered reporter who doubled as a sports entertainment superhero. Know for always doing the right thing, he devoted several years to solving mysteries and fighting for justice on RAW every Monday night.

Prior to entering WWE, Helms was a star in WCW, where he held the Cruiserweight and Hardcore Championships. As the Hurricane in WWE, he once again held the Cruiserweight Championship, and also teamed with Kane to win the World Tag Team Championship. For a brief time during WrestleMania X8, he also held the WWE Hardcore Championship.

On RAW, The Hurricane acquired a protégé in the jovial Rosey, who became his “Super Hero in Training” before ultimately graduating to official crime fighter status. As a dynamic duo, Hurricane & Rosey battled the best of the best in RAW tag team competition, from La Resistance to the Heart Throbs to Cade & Murdoch. Along the way, the duo won the World Tag Team Championship at Backlash 2005. They held the gold for nearly five months until their loss to Cade & Murdoch at Unforgiven, a loss that was the beginning of the end for The Hurricane.

After he & Rosey lost the World Tag Team Championship at Unforgiven, Helms took a turn to the dark side. He turned his back on Rosey, announcing that from then on, he would only be looking out for himself. After defeating his former partner, Helms went on a crusade to gain respect for his abilities. However, he felt that someone was holding him back.

On the final RAW of 2005, Helms complained about not being on RAW and accused Jerry "The King" Lawler of holding him back due to constantly making jokes about his ability. The next week, a challenge was made, and Helms took on Lawler at New Year's Revolution in an attempt to shut "The King" up once and for all. Instead, it was Lawler who emerged victorious.

At the 2006 Royal Rumble, Helms seized his opportunity. Kid Kash placed the Cruiserweight Championship up for grabs against any former champion in a Six-Man Match. Helms entered as the final entrant, winning the match to claim the Cruiserweight Championship. He subsequently moved from RAW to SmackDown to defend his newly won gold.

Upon his arrival, Helms claimed he could defeat any cruiserweight at any time. After defeating Scotty 2 Hotty on the Feb. 17 edition of Friday night SmackDown, Helms’ claim was put to the test when General Manager Theodore Long ordered him to face eight men in a Sudden Death Match at No Way Out. Despite the seemingly overwhelming odds, Helms was able to pin Funaki to win the match and retain the gold.
